This poem was first published anonymously, in 1823, in the Sentinel newspaper of Troy, New York. Clement C. Moore, a Bible scholar from New York, claimed authorship in 1837, but there is a rival claim on behalf of Henry Livingston, Jr., a farmer from Poughkeepsie, New York, who died in 1828 (nine years before Moore made his claim) aged 79.
The more correct title for the poem is A Visit from St. Nicholas.
